ELLSWORTH — Four girls and eight boys from the Springer’s Gymnastics Center in Ellsworth competed against gymnasts from all over New England in the 16th annual Winter Carnival last weekend in Exeter, N.H.

At Level 4, Madelyn Nida returned home as floor champion and finished third all-around in her age group.

“The girls’ meets were really big,” said coach Doug Springer. “In our first session, there were 92 girls competing at Level 4. The next session saw 72 Level 5 gymnasts. On Sunday, there were 90 boys.

“Most of our meets in Maine are smaller,” added Springer. “For all of our gymnasts, it’s really important to experience as many meets as we can. The one thing we can’t practice in our gym is what it feels like to be at a meet. Some kids get very nervous, and they need the experience of a meet to learn how to deal with it.”

Following are the meet results for Springers’ gymnasts:

Girls’ Level 4 Icicles

Gilly Rice: Third on uneven bars, fourth on floor, sixth on balance beam, seventh on vault, fifth all-around.
