Boys’ gymnastics team wins Level 5 state title

ELLSWORTH — Four gymnasts from Springers’ Gymnastics Center captured the Level 5 team championship and three of them — along with two others — claimed individual titles at Saturday’s 2013 USA Gymnastics State Championships in Bath.

Competing with more than 60 boys from five Maine gyms, Tyler Bechtold, A.J. Palmer, Andrew Gillette and Austin Snow combined to win the Level 5 championship.

Bechtold was the top all-around gymnast for ages 11 and over at Level 5 and placed first on the floor, pommel horse, vault and parallel bars, second on the high bar and third on rings.

In the same division, Palmer was first on the high bar, second on the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars and second all-around.

Gillette was first on the rings, third on the floor, pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar and third all-around.

For ages 9-10 at Level 5, Snow was second on the high bar, third on the parallel bars and fifth all-around.

At Level 6, Ben Politte was first on the vault and placed sixth all-around for ages 11 and over.

Nate Mason placed second in all events and was second all-around for ages 9-10.

At Level 4 for ages 7-8, Raist Cotroneo was first on the pommel horse and vault, second on the floor and third all-around; and Ben Muise was seventh on the vault and eighth on the rings.

Bechtold and Mason also qualified to compete in the Region 6 Championships in Springfield, Mass., April 5-7.

“The guys have worked very hard this year,” said coach Doug Springer. “We had new routines to learn, new skills and new requirements. As a whole, they all did a great job.

“Our Level 5s were driven this year, and I hope they can look back on this season and see how their hard work paid off.”
